The Pickering

1940s Wartime Weekend

The market town of Pickering hosts a very popular 1940s wartime weekend.  Much of the event takes place around the North York Moors Railway, which is where I made my base camp. Grosmont Station to be precise. The breakfast there was spiffing. With authentic steam trains departing regularly for Levisham (or "Le Visham" as it is called for the weekend) where a French village occupied by German troops was recreated ! and jolly horid they were to .

Back in Pickering itself there are parades of 1940s military and civilian vehicles (including tanks, armoured cars, trucks and vintage sportscars), as well as British soldiers, American G.I.s . It was my first visit to the event and despite some trying weather i loved it.
